Cyberstalking or cyberbullying is a problem that arises associated with the rise of new technologiesand also has its solution in itself. Because in control and responsible use of information technologyhold the potential to limit and stop all forms of harassment, threats and humiliation to which occur between peers through social networks, chat, email or web sites.
The most common forms are spreading false rumors, videos or photos humiliating, and creatingprofiles or websites to attack the victim. It can also happen that the attacker impersonates another person to offend or threaten to post personal information.
Cyberbullying is virally expanding through the Web and is invasive and harmful in that it furtherattacks can remain in cyberspace a long time, affecting the victim long term.
According to a study conducted by Ipsos consultancy more than 18,000 people in 24 countries including Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, 12 percent of parents say their children were victims of cyberbullying and 26 percent know someone in their community who was one, while 77 percent thinkthat the issue requires attention from parents and schools, and a different treatment of bullying in general.
Tips to prevent
- Use the computer as boys do. It will help you understand their online activities, programs you use and the people that relates and the dangers they may be vulnerable.
-Talk to them about the care that must be always remembered. Remind them to keep the personal information, passwords, photos and videos private.
- Teach kids to be wary of messages or files received from unknown or untrustworthy persons.
-Check the use that given to the webcam, especially not to activate it in front of strangers.
-Monitor their browsing through parental control software that allows the adult to control when andhow long they can surf the internet and the content that should be blocked (chats, forums, etc.).
- Establish rules for the use of technology. Times and places to connect, ways to react to a suspicious message, criteria for accepting new contacts.
- It's always important to maintain communication, so they feel comfortable to express if they're scared or threatened online
-The experts suggest explain that they should not respond or retaliate, immediately block people thatbother and forward it to a trusted adult. It is important not delete the messages as they can be used as evidence.
